Potty Training????

Jackson has been going potty for awhile now. He always go potty before his bath and after his bath. Last night when we got home from church, I took off his diaper and he ran straight for the potty and went! The past two mornings, he has also gone potty after he comes to get me. These are all very encouraging signs and I am trying to figure out if I should go for it!

I know that he understands and is so happy when he goes, but he is a month shy of being 2. I just don't know if he fully gets it yet, but I don't want to pass up an opportunity if he is ready to be trained.

I am wanting to know if anyone else has potty trained their kids before the age of 2? I know that potty training is a long process, but I am willing to put forth that effort if it will be worth it. I would love to hear what all of you mommies, nannies, etc. think.

i've been trying to think of what words to use here, but nothing is coming to me so i'm just saying it. sorry if it offends. grant used the potty to pee pretty much exclusively starting about a month before he turned 2. he wouldn't poop in there though. every now and then he would, but we could never be sure. he didn't start doing that until he was almost 2 1/2 and then never turned back.

Anna has been going on the potty 1-2 times a day (mostly pee sometimes poop), every day since 19 months old. Everytime I try to "go all out on potty training" and dress her without the diaper, we have a number of accidents and I lose my determination and put the diaper back on. Too messy! I'm trying to psych myself up for an endurance round of at least 5 days without diapers during waking hours. If she doesn't "get it" after that long, we'll just go back to what we are doing now which is pottying when she wants to. She is still light years ahead of her brother when he was this age in this skill.

I don't have much personal experience because mine were 2 1/2 before we really hit it full force, but John Rosemond thinks the earlier the better (if they are showing signs of readiness). He says if you miss an opportunity when they could be ready, it could be much harder later. It sounds like Jackson is doing great with it! I know Paige trained Joshua and Marah early. I think they were trained by 2. You could ask her about it. Good luck!

i know you don't know me--i know laura beth and chesley--but i potty trained my 4 year-old when she was about 21 months b/c i had baby #2 on the way. i just stayed home for a few days and kept her in nothing but underwear and asked her constantly if she needed to go, and BRIBED her like crazy. it worked like a charm and she never regressed or even had accidents. i do know boys are harder though--good luck!

So....I know nothing about kids or potty training--but I thought I'd share this: over here, they don't "potty train" ...because they don't use diapers!! All the little babies here wear split-pants from about 3 months on---no underwear, no diapers, just their little booties in all their glory exposed to all manner of whatnot! The mothers/grandmothers will periodically hold the babies w/legs spread over a trash can/street curb/bush/etc...and will whistle a pavlovian tune to train the babies to do their business. By the time they can walk, they will squat anywhere and everywhere to do both of the numbers. This is why we avoid puddles in public places! If you want to see--type "babies in split pants" to google images.

Both of my boys were potty trained right at their 2nd birthdays, Cole actually a month or two before. Good luck!

Potty Training book saved my Sanity!!!!!!

Parenting Magazine (March ‘09 issue) & Men’s Health Magazine (Sept. issue) recommends Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day: Proven Secrets of the Potty Pro by Teri Crane. My husband picked us up a copy after reading the article. IT REALLY WORKS!!

Everyone is talking about throwing a "potty party" to potty train a child. I was so desperate; I was willing to do anything. Her book outlines 10 themed parties. What kid doesn't love to play and pretend? All my mommy friends have successfully potty trained their kids with her book too.

Honestly, when I first learned of this book, I thought NO WAY! Maybe this would work on a little girl, but NOT a BOSSY, 2-1/2 year old BOY. NO WAY! Guess what? It REALLY WORKED!!! Teri Crane SAVED MY SANITY!!! Her book was easy to read, funny and extremely helpful. I can't thank Teri enough. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to EVERY parent. It will save you much grief and frustration. Potty training shouldn't be difficult, we as parents make it difficult because we don't know what to do. Teri teaches you. Buy the book, it's the best money you will ever spend

Most amazingly, I had some questions, so I called the author, and she CALLED ME BACK!!

p.s. I waited until my kid's 2nd birthday to try.

Thanks everyone for all of your feedback. I feel that it is time to embrace this new stage and go for it! I still can't believe that he is old enough for this. He will ALWAYS be my baby!!!
